What is landfill gas (LFG)?
From Gas to Energy
Most non-recyclable waste ends up in landfills. There, decomposition produces harmful and dangerous gases like methane. Without destruction, these gases leak into the atmosphere and become air pollution.
At the Western Regional Sanitary Landfill, Energy 2001 works in partnership with the Western Placer Waste Management Authority (WPWMA) to capture these gases before they leave the ground. The gases are then used to fuel combustion engines at our 5 Megawatt Plant, producing electricity that is then fed into the local power grid.
Through this process, Energy 2001 eliminates harmful methane gases, and produces enough electricity to power 3,000 homes every year.
Landfill gas is one of the most cost-competitive forms of renewable energy available. Royalties from our power sales help WPWMA meet the recycling and waste disposal needs of the growing communities of Roseville, Lincoln, Rocklin, Loomis, Auburn and Colfax.
